Where other artists work with paint, brushes and pencils on canvas or paper, Susanne Waltermann uses needle and thread to sew her pictures, stitch by stitch. The effort of the seamstress is inscribed in each of her pictures, as is the laborious process of finding form. In this context, painting over is just as important as sewing as a method of drawing. Radical cutting and dismantling are just as much a part of the working process as reassembly. Wafer-thin silk papers are glued layer by layer with Japanese paper until a wrinkled, onion-like skin forms. The paste binds the skins together and gives them a glassy transparency.
Susanne Waltermann’s work is permeated by ambiguity: the presence and simultaneous absence of the body suggested by the garments depicted. The trivialisation of the sacred and the simultaneous aestheticisation of the trivial in her votive images. In the stitched paper, which creates a complementary image of the image shown on the front with needle and thread on the back of the image carrier. In the process of sewing itself, which injures a membrane, the skin, but is at the same time indispensable for the healing process, and in the craft of sewing, which is defined as ‘feminine’ in cultural history and whose tradition of order, cleanliness and perfection she systematically undermines with irregular, coarse stitches and heavy thread.
