THROUGH TIME brings together works by Jakob Mattner created between 2019 and 2025.
The title of the exhibition might suggest a retrospective. Instead, it takes us on a very different journey through time, back towards the origins of the world, to that moment when God created the world and said:
«Let there be light. And there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.» (Gen 1:3)
Light has been a constant throughout Jakob Mattner’s work. Over a career spanning more than five decades, the Berlin-based artist has developed a singular body of drawings, paintings, and sculptures exploring the transitions between light and darkness, the visible and the invisible. In the works presented at Galerie Haas Zürich, light becomes a point of departure for reflecting on the origins of life, the natural world, and our place within the cosmos.
Mattner’s works invite us to linger before them, sensing our own existence within the universe. They do so without philosophical pathos, but with a quietness and constancy that can be deeply moving.

THROUGH TIME präsentiert Arbeiten von Jakob Mattner aus den Jahren 2019 bis 2025.
Der Titel der Ausstellung lässt zunächst an eine Retrospektive denken. Doch Jakob Mattner nimmt uns auf eine ganz andere Zeitreise mit: zurück an den Ursprung der Welt, zum Urknall oder zu jenem Moment, in dem Gott sprach:
«Es werde Licht. Und es wurde Licht. Gott sah, dass das Licht gut war, und Gott schied das Licht von der Finsternis.» (Gen 1,3)
Das Phänomen des Lichts beschäftigt Jakob Mattner seit jeher. Über mehr als fünf Jahrzehnte hat der in Berlin lebende Künstler ein eigenständiges Œuvre aus Zeichnungen, Malerei und Skulpturen entwickelt, das sich immer wieder an den Übergängen von Licht und Dunkelheit, Sichtbarem und Unsichtbarem bewegt. In den in der Galerie Haas Zürich präsentierten Arbeiten wird das Licht zum Ausgangspunkt für eine Auseinandersetzung mit den Ursprüngen des Lebens, der Natur und unserem Sein im Kosmos.
Mattners Arbeiten laden dazu ein, vor ihnen zu verweilen und das eigene Sein im Kosmos zu erspüren. Ganz ohne philosophischen Pathos, vielmehr in einer Ruhe und Beständigkeit, die bisweilen tief berührt.
